The final score read: Winnipeg Goldeyes 14, University of Winnipeg Wesmen 0. Matt Ryan Jersey . But the score wasnt important. What was important was the fact pitching coach Bill Pulsipher got nine innings of work from six different pitchers and manager Rick Forney got another good look at a handful of young players fighting for the few available jobs on the Goldeyes roster. "Everybody got to play a baseball game," Forney said after the game. "The pitchers got their work and that was the most important thing. We needed to get those guys out there on the mound and they did a good job." On the field, it was really quite unfair for a first-year Canadian university program to face an independent professional team, but the Wesmen did a nice job and certainly didnt embarrass themselves. "They settled down after the first couple of innings and played a lot better," said Forney. "It was pretty fast for them at the start and they were kicking it around a bit. I think they were probably pretty nervous. But once they settled down, they played pretty well. It was a good time." The Goldeyes scored two in the first, one in the third, four in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth. In the end, the Goldeyes scored 14 runs on 17 hits while the Wesmen had no runs on one hit. The only Goldeyes pitcher to allow a hit was Anthony Friesen, the local kid from Somerset, Man. Offensively, the Goldeyes got a two-run homer from Dan Barbero and a three run bomb from Chris Roberson. Rookie David Narodowski had two doubles and drove in four runs while Price Kendall had four hits, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. "It was a good game to be a part of," Kendall said. "It was a good reminder of what baseball is all about. We get paid to do this, but those college kids are doing it for fun. Its a kids game and were lucky that we get to play it as adults. And I remember, when I was a college kid, I idolized the pros, major or minor league. It was fun to be on the field with them." Kendall has struggled at the plate before Friday nights game and was pleased that he had a chance to work on a few things. "I had a lot of things to work on," he said with a smile. "Until tonight, I hadnt had a hit. I wanted to work on my approach at the plate, let the ball get deeper and hit it up the middle. I was swinging a lot better tonight." Among the other highlights: Yurendell de Caster had had two hits and two RBI; Matt Cusick had a hit three walks and two runs scored; and Kyle Day had three hits and an RBI. The Goldeyes will now get on the bus and head south. They will play pre-season games in St. Paul on Sunday afternoon and Monday night, another pre-season game on Tuesday night -- a seven-inning game starting at 8 p.m. in Kansas City -- and then the regular season starts next Friday in Amarillo. "Its going to be quite a trip," said Kendall with a grin. "When we get back well either all be best friends or worst enemies. One things for sure, well know each other pretty well by the time its over." Steve Smith Jersey . Matt Dominguez added a two-run homer in the second inning while Anibal Sanchez allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work to record the win. Lance Berkman belted a solo homer in the second inning as he went 2-for-2 and Adron Chambers knocked in a run to go along with his two hits in the Cardinals first game of spring training.Larry Fitzgerald Jersey . Scott Nichol scored the tying goal in the third and J.P. Dumont scored the overtime winner as Nashville picked up a big two points in the Western Conference playoff race with a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday. NaVorro Bowman Jersey . Just ask the Winnipeg Goldeyes how Saturday nights 4-0 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats went. Adrian Peterson Jersey . Falling behind by four runs in the first inning hardly helped. "I was going to pitch as long as I could," he said. Earl Thomas Jersey . Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said Thursday that he made an offer to extend Rauls contract, which expires at the end of the season, in an email to the Spaniards representative, Gines Carvajal.VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver racetrack where Mexican jockey Mario Gutierrez made his start will celebrate his victories Saturday instead of sulking in the disappointment of a missed opportunity for the Triple Crown. But the horse owner who mentored the young man who arrived in Canada with virtually nothing says the star of the dashed but magical run for the last jewel in the Triple Crown is now Gutierrez, not the horse Ill Have Another. "Im so proud of that boy, regardless of what happened today," Glen Todd said Friday after speaking with the jockey. "Hes still got his chin up. Hes sad, naturally." Ill Have Another was unexpectedly scratched from the Belmont Stakes on Friday due to a tendon injury and has now been retired. Todd, who describes himself as Gutierrezs Canadian father, met the 25-year-old jockey six years ago. "He came from a little town in Mexico with a garbage bag full of clothes and that was his whole belongings and here he is a few years later in the biggest races in the world." Gutierrez will return to Vancouver on July 2 to ride one of his horses in a big-stake race, Todd said. He said Gutierrez rode Ill Have Another for the first time in January but thought the horse was so super hed never get to race it. "Sure enough, he got to ride it and that started the story." Now, fans have dubbed Gutierrez "Super Mario." The jockey is so grateful for his time at Hastings Park and the dreams hes fulfilled on a Canadian horse that he wants to become a Canadian citizen, Todd said. "He loves Vancouver. Hes done so much for the city in putting us on the map in the racing world. Its unbelievable." Howard Blank, vice-president of the Great Canadian Gaming Corp., which runs the Hastings Park racetrack, said Ill Have Anothers premature retirement is sad, but his achievements are worth celebrating. "Initially we were disappointed for Mario and for the Ill Have Another team but our sadness turned into joy because we took a breath and realized what a remarkable accomplishment Mario has made already," Blank. The colt nabbed the Kentucky Derby on May 5 and the Preakness two weeks later before his bid to become the first Triple CCrown winner since Affirmed in 1978. Marshawn Lynch Jersey. Blank said the affable jockey will still be racing three different horses at Belmont on Saturday, so fans at the Vancouver track can watch the jockey in action. "Hopefully hell be able to watch from our live feed, all the fans here who will be cheering him on." Blank said Gutierrez ran two great races at the Belmont on Friday, coming in second in both and that he hasnt let his disappointment stop him from doing what he loves. The gaming corporation is working with the City of Vancouver on a special Mario Day proclamation this summer, complete with a ticker-tape parade, he said. Ivan Puhich, Gutierrezs agent, said scratching Ill Have Another was the best thing, although hes been feeling down about the turn of events. "Why would you be happy when the odds are favoured for a Triple Crown victory? Youre 85 years old, youve been in the business for 70 years, why would you be happy?" As for Gutierrez, "hes handling it quite well," said Puhich on the phone from a Mexican restaurant in Pomana, Calif., where Los Angeles County has a race meeting every year. "Hes a nice, beautiful young man. He knows no evil, he speaks no evil, he thinks no evil." Dawn Moshonas, who has two show-jumping horses at the Southlands boarding stables in Vancouver, said Gutierrezs inspiring story has introduced a lot of people to the sport of horseracing. "Every horse person I know is rooting for him," she said. "I was just really sad that I didnt get to watch history in the making. But it just shows how much they care about the horse more than anything." Moshanas said she met Gutierrez about two years ago in the paddock at Hastings Park when he rode her bosss horse. "He seemed to me like such a sweet human being, and the one thing thats been so wonderful is how hes been promoting Vancouver." Pippa Emrick, who co-ordinates an annual fair for the Southlands Riding Club, said members will still gather for a party to watch the Belmont on Saturday. "One of our members has a horse thats running in the race before the Belmont so they were going to watch her horse and then watch Mario." ' ' '
