eee ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves knocked around Cole Hamels in the opener, then chased Roy Halladay in the fourth inning on Wednesday night. Nate Robinson White Jersey . They have six homers through two games against the Philadelphia Phillies. Jason Heyward just loves what he is seeing so far. "Jumping out early is huge," he said. "Its not always going to happen, but its nice to do and nice to give your pitcher that cushion." Heyward, Justin Upton and rookie Evan Gattis homered, leading Paul Maholm and the Braves to a 9-2 victory over the Phillies. Freddie Freeman had three RBIs and leadoff hitter Andrelton Simmons scored twice for Atlanta, which jumped in front for the second straight game and never trailed. Upton belted a two-run shot in the first to give him a pair of homers in his first two games with the Braves. Halladay (0-1), who struggled with a sore shoulder last season and had a difficult spring training, gave up five runs and six hits in 3 1-3 innings. The two-time Cy Young Award winner struck out nine, but dropped to 0-4 with an 8.00 ERA in his last seven starts against Atlanta. "I felt good," Halladay said. "Felt good in the bullpen, felt good on the mound. Obviously horrible conditions to pitch in. That made it no fun, but thats not an excuse for not being able to get ahead of guys and do it consistently and put guys away quicker." The game was played in a chilly, steady drizzle, but the conditions hardly affected Maholm (1-0), who allowed six hits in 5 2-3 scoreless innings. He struck out six and walked one. "It was good," Maholm said. "Obviously, in the first start of the year, not the greatest conditions, but I felt comfortable." Gattis led off the fourth inning of his first major league game with a drive to left. Maholm struck out, but Halladays night was over after he issued a walk to Simmons. Raul Valdes came in and walked the next two batters before Freeman hit a bases-clearing double to make it 7-0. Freeman has driven in six of Atlantas 16 runs in the first two games. Maholm struggled last year against Philadelphia with an 8.64 ERA in two starts. But the left-hander stranded runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings in his first start of 2013. Cory Gearrin replaced Maholm with a runner on first in the sixth. He walked one before striking out Erik Kratz. The Phillies were just 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position. "I thought (Maholm) did a terrific job," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He mixed his pitches well and he did a nice job. Gave us a great opportunity to win the ballgame." Juan Francisco also singled in a run in the first as Atlanta quickly built a 3-0 lead. Halladay recorded his first eight outs on strikeouts, but he needed 79 pitches to make it through the first three innings. He was trying for win No. 200 and a spot alongside New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte as the only active pitchers to be 100 games over .500. Halladay was upset with himself for making such an early exit. "Id rather get beat 20-0 and pitch eight innings than pitch 3 1-3," he said. "Thats got to change." Chase Utley had a two-run double in the seventh for Philadelphia. Utley appeared to score a third run, but home plate umpire Mike Everitt called Michael Young out for runners interference at first and the inning ended. Heyward tacked on a two-run homer against Jonathan Papelbon in the eighth, but the Atlanta right fielder thought the key was making Halladay work. "We did wear him down," Heyward said. "We did make sure that we got some pitches to hit and we hit them hard." NOTES: The Braves struck out 16 times. ... Freeman has reached in six of his eight plate appearances this season. ... DALLAS -- Paul George and Indiana Pacers went on an offensive surge in the third quarter to sink the Dallas Mavericks. However, all Pacers coach Frank Vogel could talk about was his top-ranked defence. George had 24 points and eight rebounds and the Pacers broke open a close game in the third quarter to beat the Mavericks 103-78 on Thursday night. With the game tied at half, the Pacers outscored the Mavericks 34-17 in the third. George had eight points in a 20-5 run to open the second half. Vogel said his teams defence allowed Indiana to pull away in the second half. "Our defensive effort keeps getting better and better," Vogel said. "Im very impressed with how dialed in our guys are and how disciplined theyre playing on the defensive end." The Central Division-leading Pacers won their fourth straight and have a half-game lead for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. Indiana is 2-0 on a four-game Western Conference trip. The Pacers beat the Houston Rockets 100-91 on Wednesday night. "It was great win," George said. "For us to come out and match their same intensity was huge, especially on their floor." Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points for Dallas, which remained 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. "Having a dud like this on our home floor is definitely disheartening," Dallas centre Elton Brand said. Nowitzki and five of his teammates have grown out beards since early February and vowed not to shave until the Mavericks (35-37) got back to .500. Those unshaven Mavericks will have to put their razors away for at least a few more days as Indiana denied Dallas a chance to even its record for the first time since Dec. 12. Pacers centre Roy Hibbert didnt want the Mavericks to pull out the clippers just yet. "We heard something about them wanting to shave or doing something like that," Hibbert said. "We wanted to shut that (stuff) down to begin wwith. Dennis Rodman Bulls Jersey. They wanted to get to .500 so they gave us their best effort in the first half. David West scored seven points in his return for the Pacers after missing six games with a lower back strain. The Pacers outrebounded the Mavericks 55-34 and scored 15 second chance points. Dallas suffered its 11th loss of 20 points or more this season. "It was a wipeout for us as far as the rebounding," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "Thats been a challenge for us." George Hill hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and break a 41-all halftime tie. George hit a 21-footer to push Indianas lead to 49-42. Indiana closed the 20-5 run with a couple of layups from Hill and a jumper from Ian Mahinmi to make it 61-46 midway through the third. George scored 13 points in the third. He finished 10 of 17 from the field and had six assists and three steals. Mahinmi closed the third with a dunk off a pass from Orlando Johnson as the Pacers outscored the Mavericks 34-17 in the third. Vince Carter had 14 points and Darren Collison added 10 or Dallas.
